What it means

How the differences affect the job

Start with the file, the people receiving it, and what needs to happen after delivery.

01

Start with where the file should live

Dropbox is a cloud workspace first. Its folders are meant to stay available, sync across devices, and support ongoing work. TransferSize is built around a delivery link, although paid accounts can also keep files in My Files.

02

Dropbox Transfer is for finished work

Dropbox separates Transfer from normal shared folders. A transfer sends a copy that the recipient can download without joining the folder or opening a Dropbox account. That is closer to TransferSize than a normal Dropbox share link is.

03

The free limits are far apart

Dropbox Basic can send a 2 GB transfer. TransferSize allows a file up to 50 GB for free. If the file is small, the limit may not matter; if it is a video, archive, or photo set, it may decide the choice immediately.

04

File requests use your storage

Dropbox file requests collect uploads into a folder in your Dropbox account, so you need enough space for them. TransferSize receive links collect client files inside the TransferSize workspace. In either service, close old requests when the job is done.

Questions

Questions people ask

Is Dropbox Transfer the same as a shared Dropbox folder?

No. A transfer sends a copy for someone to download. A shared folder stays in Dropbox so people can sync, comment, and keep working on the same files.

Which service sends the larger file for free?

TransferSize allows a free file up to 50 GB. Dropbox Basic can send a transfer up to 2 GB.

Does the recipient need a Dropbox account?

Not for a Dropbox Transfer download. The sender does need a Dropbox account. A basic TransferSize send does not require an account on either side.

How we checked this comparison

TransferSize wrote this page, so it is not an independent review. We checked the competitor's own plan, product, and help pages on 2026-08-25.

  • We compare the jobs both services can reasonably handle, even when the products are not identical.
  • We say when the other service is the better fit.
  • We do not name a speed or quality winner without a repeatable test.

If a fact has changed, email support@transfersize.com with the page and an official source.
